Biggest Loser Exposes Idol Star Ruben Studdard’s Weight
Who could forget the international musical phenomenon that is Idol. The original series has spawned local versions in over 50 countries around the world as well as regional competitions and a Junior competition. It has frequently topped the viewing charts in most countries with a series and launched the careers of some of the top musical artists of the last decade.
One of these winners is Ruben Studdard, a gospel, pop and R&B singer from Alabama who won the second series of American Idol in 2003. Although Ruben had been involved in the music industry prior to auditioning for Idol, it wasn’t until he won that year’s competition that his career took off. And how!
By June 2007 he had sold more than 2,400,000 albums in the US alone and had become the fifth best American Idol performer based on album sales. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2003 and was voted the NAACP Outstanding New Artist award in 2004.
His musical talent notwithstanding, one other thing Ruben Studdard is known for is his size. However, with a family history of hypertension and diabetes he went on a fitness and diet program in 2004/05 in a concerted effort to lose weight. And managed to shed more than 70 pounds.
Unfortunately, his weight crept up again and when he appeared on the 2013 series of Biggest Loser he had the highest starting weight and BMI of all the contestants in that series. Standing 6’3”, he weighed in at 462 pounds but lost a total of 119 pounds in the series, despite being eliminated in week 8. And he seems to have been able to keep it off too.
