A Dietitian's Approach Towards Fast Weight-Loss Programs

In trying to lose weight, it is normal for the typical programs to set goals for weight loss between 1 and 2 pounds per week (½ ~ 1 kg). This may not seem like much, but this kind of weight loss really helps keep the weight off on a more permanent basis.

These types of programs to help the body metabolism to maintain a proper and necessary to maintain muscle mass.

This does not mean acting quickly weight loss programs do not exist, but for people who are not clinically obese, these programs are not healthy and strongly recommends against.

The fact is that if you’re looking to lose 25 pounds or less, then a rapid weight loss program is not for you.

Do rapid weight loss programs work?

The fact is that there are numerous amounts to act fast weight loss programs that exist in the market today. Most of these programs try to incorporate a healthy balanced diet while still retaining the rapid action result in low intake of calories. One of these programs is Medifast, which has been used by medical professionals for a long time. This program promotes a 2 to 5 pounds per week loss.

These diets are very similar and consist of very low calorie intake. This is why we fall under the category of a VLCD (very low calorie diet). These diets allow only consumption of 800 calories or less. Popular Diets in this category as Cambridge or the Optifast diet, should never be done without medical supervision of a health professional and only meant to be short term.

What should I bother with rapid weight loss?

Since the rapid weight loss diets are based mainly on low calorie consumption, the possibility of having a nutrition
deficiency as a result of these diets is very clear. If there is no proper precaution taken to balance these diets, health problems can develop.

The body was not made to last so long low on calories and it is normal for people to feel irritable and fatigued. Other side effects may include constipation, as a result of insufficient absorption of fiber.

A Dietitian's Approach Towards Fast Weight-Loss ProgramsAnother thing to worry with such diets is your metabolism. The body naturally prepares for life threatening situations. During these diets low in calories, the body may actually believe that is in jeopardy and put hunger on the way in which the metabolism slows down to protect the body. Since you really are not starving but merely a diet your body goes into a yo-yo affect once power is restored. Also, when a rapid weight loss is often the case that could eat into their muscle mass (catabolism), which is something we definitely do not want.

Who are these programs designed for?

These programs were actually designed for obese, which by definition is somebody with a BMI over 30. If you are someone who just struggles a bit with his weight and are slightly over its ideal, these programs are not recommended because it can cause potential problems in the long run. You should think of other methods of weight loss, for example, exercises and healthy food.

What about fad diets?

Fad diets like the famous Atkins or South Beach Diet all are mostly based on an introductory phase, where weight loss is significant. These diets, however, have much stricter restrictions on food items such as carbohydrates and weight loss with these programs is really accomplished due to the (weight) loss of water.
