When your mother and her sister both have diabetes it’s a pretty sure bet that you’re going to be genetically predisposed to get it too. That is, unless you’re particularly careful with your diet and weight with a view to minimizing the risk of developing it yourself.
Popular R&B artist, actress and producer Angie Stone found this out the hard way. Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 1999, the once excessively curvy singer also suffers from congestive heart failure and high blood pressure courtesy of a diabetes medication she was on.

So long as she keeps up her healthy lifestyle, there’s no reason why Angie Stone won’t be around to entertain us with her talent for many more years to come.

You want quick results in losing weight, and you can achieve them with strength training. After only three months of two hour-long strength-training sessions a week, your body will become smaller. Your waist will be smaller, as will your upper arms, and your stomach will be flatter.
You only need to do two sessions of strength training a week. If you feel really ambitious, you can do three, but don't do any more than that. Strength training causes small tears in the fibers of your muscles. This is good, because as they repair on your "off" days the muscles become stronger and tighter. If you do strength training every day, your muscles won't have time to rebuild between sessions.
Strength Training Approaches
- Free weights.
Very popular, easy to use, widely available. Start with 2- to 3-pound weights and add weight as your body adapts to the weight. - Stretch tubing.
A stretchy thin tube with handles on each end. Resembles a jump rope. You can purchase in several levels of resistance. - Flex band.
A long, wide, stretchy band used for resistance training. - Ankle and wrist weights.
Strap them on for resistance as you do strengthening exercises. - Body bar.
A long, weighted bar used for resistance training. May or may not have additional removable weights on either end. - A big inflated ball on which to do exercises. Seems innocent enough, but provides really challenging strength-training exercise.
- Magic circle.
A circular handheld ring, about 15 inches in diameter with handles across from each other. By compressing the circle with legs, arms, and other body parts, you can get quite a workout. - Pilates classes and equipment.
An exercise method that creates long, lean, and strong muscles, plus very strong abs and terrific posture. - Exercise machines.
Set the resistance of the machines to match your strength levels. - Power-pump classes.
Lift weights while you keep pace with the music.
Muscle weighs more than fat. Because of this, a person with higher muscle mass could weigh more, and yet wear a smaller size. In addition to using your weight as a measure of attaining your ideal size, take into account your body fat percentage.
Body Fat Percentage
Having a higher body fat percentage brings with it significant health risks including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and autoimmune disorders.
When you have your body fat tested at a health club or at a health practitioner’s, you’ll receive a reading of body fat, water, and muscle percentages. All three add up to 100 percent. Assuming that the amount of water weight remains almost constant for each individual, the variables are body fat and muscle. The more muscle you have, the less body fat you have (and vice versa).

Understanding Body Fat
In body fat measurements, lower is usually best, but don’t go below the recommended guidelines. A person must have at least some body fat to be healthy. Fat pads internal organs such as the kidneys, and it also offers protection against cold weather. For women, the minimum recommended fat percentage is 12 percent. If a woman has less, her menstrual cycles could cease. Men must have a minimum of 5 percent to stay healthy.
Improving Your Muscles
By doing strength-training exercises for two to three hours a week, you can reduce your body fat percentage by as much as 10 percentage points within six months.
Having less body fat and more muscle gives you more energy, higher stamina, more muscle definition, and a higher metabolism. This means you’ll burn through calories faster and can eat more food without gaining weight.

Butt Exercise Mini Series - Saddle Bags and Upper/Lower Butt Section
Managing Saddle Bags
Saddlebags refer to the extension of the hip that is normally associated to access fat on the hip and thigh creating an overly bulbous hour glass shape that is very heavy at the bottom. This is characteristic to women as when women gain fat the first areas that fat will store is here.
To reduce the fat in this area, the normal slimming techniques for overall weight loss should be started first. This is because generally females will loose fat in those areas first before fat in other areas will reduce. Thus you general dieting, calorie cutting and routine exercises should be attempted first before any other means are tried. On the flipside, if you are a man and suffer from saddlebags, then the basic dieting will reduce the fat deposit there however not successfully eliminate it. Research has shown that men who deposit fat in the hip regions generally either have a family history of it or suffer from hormonal imbalances.
Before going into exercises and trimming techniques for troublesome thigh saddlebags, I’d like to go into a bit about hormones and how they actually contribute largely to the development of problems like cellulite and saddlebags, for both guys and girls. The main element that causes hormonal imbalances in this day and age is the food that we eat. Research has shown that due to the amount of growth hormones put into our poultry and cattle; a lot of it is passed down the food chain to the final consumers us. This means that we are actually consuming a high proportion of the growth hormones given to poultry and cattle. The best medium of transfer for growth hormones is milk.
Now that we know the dangers that we are faced with everyday from the growth hormones in our food, we must understand that weird fat accumulation can be directly caused by having a diet rich in milk, cattle and chicken products. In this case you should try other alternatives before going for any other radical options. This is especially true for men, as men really should not have saddlebags; if they do it’s probably because of their diet.
After doing your basic exercises like the Outer Thigh Leg Lift and some weight loss diets and regimes, you should see a significant reduction of the problematic saddlebag problem. Generally this would be more than enough for most people, however there are a unlucky few who even when fat is lost in most other areas of the body, the thighs and saddle bags remain a problematic area. In which case, we have to go to more drastic measures.
The first thing you I recommend you try is an 1 hour to 1.5 hour bicycle ride either using a mountain bike or a stationary unit. Make sure that your heart rate is relatively high but be just enough that you don’t exhaust yourself before the set time. What happens here is that after 20 minutes the carbohydrates stored at the muscles are used up and the body has to draw more energy from other sources, and since the exercise isn’t particularly exertive, the body will choose to burn fat rather than muscle. The extra time will mean there is a slow burn of the fat and fat will be drawn from the largest deposit, meaning the thighs or the saddlebags.
I personally don’t believe in creams, as all they do it tighten the muscles however after 1 or 2 days the skin will loosen up again and you’re left back at the drawing board. Alternatively, the best way to permanently tighten skin is to actually get some sun and salt! If you aren’t too self conscious, a trip to the beach will do your skin good in tightening it.
Additionally, there is also great benefit in drinking more plain water What happens is that if you consume a lot of water, the body get used to the situation where water is always readily available thus it reduces water retention which will also help in making your saddle bags smaller.
Having explained all this, I would like to say that although you may think that your saddlebags are big, some people may actually like it, its just a matter of human preferences, so before you go about trying to loose the assets, you should consider if they actually do you more good being there than not.
Managing Excess Fat at the Lower Butt Area
What I am referring to here is the section of your butt that hangs below the hip joint. Right at the bottom of your butt cheeks there is normally a normally a small slab of fat that creates an overhang. This region is notoriously hard to work on as fat is very readily deposited there and normally stays there.
One thing to realize is that this region consist most of fat and skin with very little muscle, the only thing you would want to do with this area is to either reduce the amount of fat to make it hang a bit less or to tighten the skin so that more of the fat is transferred upwards accenting the shape of the butt.
If you are interested in fat reduction then the only option is a very simple weight loss program which will also help in reducing the weight in other areas including the butt area. The problem with this area is that it is very hard to develop a good exercise program as the gluteus maximus muscle is located above this area thus working the glutes will not necessarily have an impact on this area.
On the other hand if you would like to try tighten the skin to try lift the butt area, there are very simple methods to do this. The first method is to try get some sun, literally go to the beach where you can get salt water and the sun acting on the area which will help tighten the skin. Alternatively you can also try make it easier for the fat to be brought up through the pores by sweat when you are exercising by keeping the pores open and always keeping it clean. This has to work in conjunction with properly massaging the area so the fat is evenly distributed.
Managing Excess Fat at the Upper Butt Section
What I am referring too here is the fat that is situated on the upper side of the butt which basically makes the butt look round and conform to the whole bubble butt problem that some people don’t find particularly enticing. What happens is that instead of the fat being deposited at the lower part of the butt, fat is instead deposited at the top.
The good news is that the gluteus maximus muscle is located directly below the upper butt area thus with enough exercise it is relatively easy to spot reduce fat from the upper butt area compared to the side of the thigh or even the lower butt area. So far, the best exercises for targeting access fat at the upper butt area are deep squats. As with any fat reduction exercise that isn’t cardio based like running or walking, it is important to keep the reps high and the weight low. For the best results I would recommend that you not even use any weights, instead just do deep squats but with very high reps (50-80) per set. Because you are not using any weights you can afford to do very deep squats, make sure your heel touches your butt when you go down.
Normal dieting does not work so well for reducing fat in this area, especially for women as the first place that the body will absorb is from the thighs and the lower butt. With prolonged dieting this area can be affected however the results might not be satisfactory as you may have lost weight in other areas which you might not have wanted.
Again I have to say, you should be aware that although you may consider your butt big or disproportioned, it might be your view, other may think that your butt is just fine and might not require any work. Do ask for opinions before committing yourself to work out certain areas of your butt.

There are so many misconceptions about the butt flying around the internet that I’d just like to set the records straight. The first and worst misconception is that just doing your basic butt exercises like lunges or squats, you will get a butt as great as the supermodels. This is wrong, the basic principle at work here is that everyone posses a different type of butt. No one exercise or regime can possibly be an all-encompassing solution to all your butt issues.
The basic fact is that different type of butt exercises will give you different results. Each type of exercise will hit different muscle groups in a different way. Based on what you want for results there is definitely a set of exercises that will get you to your result much faster than just doing every exercise that is presented. What I’ll attempt to do in this section is to drill it down to the basics of what exercises are good what for type of results you are pursuing.
But also bear in mind that this section is specifically designed for butt exercise only and in order to get the proper results you will need to look at other factors including both the butt fat and butt skin section to get a holistic solution to your butt issues. In order to make the proper decisions relating to which exercise to do you should first go to my Butt Assessment page where you can determine what your butt type is and what your goals are.
This next section i'll show you some butt exercises that can be done in the gym. The purpose of these exercises would almost be 100% for increasing the amount of muscle at the butt.
If on the other hand you feel that building muscle mass isn't important to you then you can also lengthen the muscles in your butt so it isn't all condensed into one particular area. These exercises are particularly important if you have a bubble but that mostly consists of muscles and you'd like to even out the structure for a more natural look.

The Hip Extension Exercise has been recognized as one of the most targeted low intensity exercises for the butt. It almost completely concentrates on the glute muscles and also the lower back which is great for both lifting, firming and developing the butt. The only downside to this exercise is that it is relatively mild, you generally can’t place any weights on your feet thus most of the time you’ll be doing the exercise free-weight which might not be the best for butt muscle development.
Below is a great example of posture and style in which a hip extension should be done, pay particular attention to the piece of pipe between the trainer’s shoulders and butt, it is always suspended between his shoulders and his butt showing that the proper posture is to have your back arched downwards so that you can get the right level of extension for your legs.
Admittedly, the exercise looks quite easy and you may think that it isn’t the best exercise to build your butt. It’s also been tarnished by the fact that this exercise is used widely by the elderly or rehabilitating sick people, plainly because the exercise is just that good and effective at building both lower body strength and mobility. You would be wrong to dismiss this exercise, medical journals have established that this type of exercise is one of the most effective exercises to build strength in both your butt region and lower back.
Get down on your elbows (or hands) and knees, abs tight and back flat to maintain a good posture. Take one leg and kick it back as far as you can, imagine you’re kicking a dog behind you. Squeeze the butt to lift right leg until it's level with hips then lower. Repeat for 12-16 reps before switching sides. You should be feeling a nice good burn at your butt and lower back muscles, if you don’t yet feel a burn increase the number of reps until you do.
Here lies the secret to this exercise, mind you because you are not using weights, your reps must be quite high, this does not mean that you should stop at 15-20, if you can still continue to do more, you should until you find it distinctly difficult to raise you leg for the final rep, it is this forced final rep that will bring the most effect to your exercise and you should never forget to push the limit for the best results. Remember, you must always feel great strain at the final rep then you have done a good set.
To properly benefit from this exercise you must understand that because you aren’t using any weights, you must perform a high number of reps. Being an exercise with high reps, it isn’t best suited to building mass rather its benefit is in adding tone to the butt and also effectively lifting the butt. Very few exercises can help in lifting the butt but hip extensions manage to do this because the exercise also calls into use the muscles of the lower back which will eventually tighten and pull the butt upwards. There-in lies the benefit to this exercise.
Remember to always squeeze your butt muscles when your legs are already extended, this give a very good burn, and is especially useful for people looking to add an extra perk to the butt. By constricting and squeezing at the very end of the rep, the muscle is forced to work when it is already at its smallest and tightest position, making it grow in girth and thus adding definition.

Outer Thigh Leg Lifts
The Outer Thigh Leg Lift exercise sometimes referred to as the Abduction Leg lift, the main muscle groups targeted are the gluteus maximus (main butt muscles) and your hamstrings. Incidentally the main muscle that is used here for lifting the legs sidewards is also the gluteus maximus, it’s just the extension of the muscles that wraps around the side of the leg down into the knees.
It has to be said that outer tight leg lifts are great at toning and defining, however since you are not working with any weights, the amount of sheer muscle building as compared to Squats or Lunges is minimal, this exercise is great for adding definition to the side of the thigh and create a rounder, more wholesome look to both the thigh and the butt.
Outer Thigh Leg Raises
Outer thigh leg raises, when done properly will add tightness to the outer side of the thighs to pull up any saddle bags that might be present. If done properly will also work the outer thigh area aerobically and help to reduce any fat deposits such as unwanted cellulites or access fat.
An important point to note here is that because this exercise does not involve weights, you need to push the reps rather than the weights. Look to be doing as many reps as possible on sets, don’t just do 12-15 and call it a set. The final rep should be quite difficult and a challenge.
As with doing other exercises with weights, the final rep is the most important rep, it is the rep that will do the most benefit to you and in this exercise will create the best muscle tone, don’t short change your work-out by not going to the final rep. At the peak of the final rep it is also important to try hold rep for a moment before finishing the set.
Keeping the chest lifted, exhale and raise your right leg out to the side away from the body to a height of at least 45 degrees. Flex the foot, holding the lifted position for two seconds. Breathe in and slowly lower the leg back to the start position. Repeat 10 to 15 or more times on the right side before switching to the left. Slowly build up to three sets of 15 repetitions or more. For variation this exercise can also be performed with the leg turned in or out.
You will read in most other places that you should do 10-15 reps at most, I would like to again restate that I feel it is vitally important that you reach that last difficult rep before giving up to gain the most from your exercise. This may take up to 25 or even 30 reps and as you get more fit it may even extend to 40, in either case it should still be done.

Russell Westbrook Workout Includes Peanut Butter And Jelly Sandwich
Russell Westbrook is one of the fastest and most explosive athletes in the NBA. A lot of it his abilities come from raw, natural talent but the Russell Westbrook workout regime is specifically designed to maximize his balance and stabilization. Based on instability training, the principle behind it is to train the body’s core to stabilize the body even during extreme movements.

For instance, just walking in sand has been shown to increase energy use by 1.8 to 2.7 times vs walking on hard ground. And if you want to run in it you’ll use up 1.2 to 1.6 times as much energy.

Week 1:

Week 3:
